2019 to 2022 is the sweet spot. The generation on sale from 2018 moved to a stiffer platform with a proper touchscreen and a far quieter cabin than the 2011 to 2017 car, and was replaced again for 2023 by a larger, sharper-nosed sedan. Be on the right side of 2018.

The Corolla asks more for the same year, and the premium buys reputation rather than a better car to drive. The Hyundai Elantra is the sibling one size up, worth the step if you spend real time on the motorway, though it brings a tyre problem of its own: mismatched or damaged sets on 23% of cars against the 14% expected for the class.
