2020 to 2022 is the sweet spot, and 2020 is the line to be on the right side of. The W167 GLE arrived for the 2020 model year on a new platform, with an optional third row, the twin-screen MBUX cabin and the GLE450's 3.0-litre inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system — smoother and more efficient than the V6 it replaced. The 2016 to 2019 W166 is a generation behind inside and out.

It gives up a little more than the class, which works for the buyer: about 41% of its value after five years against roughly 44% for the SUVs it competes with. A two-to-three-year-old car with options is the buy.

The bodywork reads better than the class. Only 31% of the Mercedes GLE450s we inspect in the UAE carry evidence of prior body or panel repair, against the 48% we would expect for SUVs of the same age and mileage here. Repair history is normal on a big family SUV, so the question is the standard of the work. Air suspension and the service record are what turn a cheap GLE into an expensive one.

The BMW X5 costs less and is the better drive, though 44% carry prior body repair against the 65% expected for SUVs of that age and mileage here. The Range Rover HSE is cheaper and more luxurious but costlier to keep, and the Toyota Land Cruiser is the one if you go off-road.
