The GLE-Class moved to its current W167 platform in 2019, with rear-axle steering as an option, a fully digital cockpit and sharper styling over the 2015-2019 original. A 2019-onward car is the newer generation underneath; earlier cars are the original design, mechanically proven but visibly dated inside.

The Toyota Land Cruiser is dearer but built for harder off-road use. A Nissan Patrol undercuts it with more interior space and a simpler drivetrain. The BMW X5 is the sharper-handling rival at similar money.

Very well on the evidence of our inspections. We find a mechanical fault in the engine, gearbox, suspension or steering on none of the GLE400s we check, against the 20% we would expect for large premium SUVs of this age and mileage in the UAE. That is a reason to prioritise the inspection report on the specific car over worrying about the model in general.

  • Air suspension for warning lights or sagging.
