Frequently asked questions

About AED 43,000 buys a 2017 Ford Explorer in our closed sales, with a 2016 averaging AED 32,000, a 2015 AED 24,000, a 2014 AED 20,000 and a 2013 AED 17,000. Live asking prices run from AED 15,000 for a late-2010s car to AED 116,500 for an early-2020s one.

Two things need checking, and both are cheap to find and awkward to fix later. Interior staining shows on 47% of the more than 750 Ford Explorers CarSwitch has inspected in the UAE, against the 39% we would expect for SUVs of the same age and mileage in the Emirates — a school-run car with a full cabin does that, and it is a price argument rather than a reason to walk. An electrical or electronics fault turns up on 22% against the 15% expected for SUVs of this age and mileage here, so test the third-row folding mechanism, the rear climate and every screen before you commit.

  • Cabin condition — carpets, seat bases and boot lining, priced into your offer.
  • Rear climate and third-row electrics, tested individually.
  • Cooling system at idle, in traffic, with the AC on full.
  • Gearbox and transfer case behaviour from cold.

Every Ford Explorer we list in the UAE comes with its full CarSwitch inspection report. Read the interior and electrical sections first — that is where the negotiating room is.

2020 is the big split. The Explorer moved to a rear-drive-based platform for 2020, which transformed the way it drives and freed up the third row; the 2011 to 2019 car is the front-drive-based generation, facelifted in 2016. On a used budget, 2016 to 2019 buys the best of the old shape, while 2020 to 2022 is the one to stretch for.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee costs similar money, shows prior panel repair on 56% of the ones we inspect and is the better-driving car with only five seats. The Toyota Prado is dearer and the tougher long-term proposition. Within Ford, the Ford Edge is cheaper if you can live without the third row.
