2020 to 2022 is the window worth paying for. The A4 moved to a new platform around 2016 with a far better cabin than the 2008-to-2015 car, then took a substantial mid-life update around 2020 bringing the current infotainment and mild-hybrid assistance. Anything from 2016 on is the modern car; post-2020 is the one that still feels current.

The BMW 520 is the one to have for mechanical peace of mind, with an engine, gearbox, suspension or steering fault on 8% of inspections against the 17% expected for sedans of its age and mileage here — but it costs a lot more. The Mercedes C200 undercuts the A4 and shows interior staining on 38% against an expected 31%. Within Audi, the Audi A8 can be had for less at the older end of the range.
