Frequently asked questions

The 500 has kept the same retro shape and platform for most of its production run, so a newer example mainly buys fresher trim and infotainment rather than a mechanical step change. Favour a well-documented car over a slightly newer one with a thin file.

The similarly priced Kia Rio shows interior staining on 47% of cars against the 34% we would expect for city cars of this age here, worse than the 500's own results. The cheaper Ford Figo comes in even higher at 58% against the same benchmark, which makes the 500 the tidier cabin of the three if you can stretch to it.

The cars we inspect here run a median of 40,000 km, low enough that this is still mostly a car bought for city duty rather than long-distance grinding. At that kind of mileage, condition and how it's been parked day to day tell you more than the odometer does.

  • Clutch feel and gear engagement on the manual gearbox.
  • Air conditioning performance, essential and heavily used in this climate.
  • Interior trim and upholstery condition, since this is a small cabin that shows wear fast.
  • Parking sensor and reverse camera function if fitted.
