If you are an ex-pat in the UAE, you have to undergo the procedure of sending your car back home. If you want to export your vehicle, no matter what the reason is, see the following documents and processes needed to guarantee that your wheels arrive at the final destination without any problems.
Needed documents
The first step of exporting the vehicle is canceling the car registration. You will need to go to the nearest Road and Transport Authority (RTA) branch and submit the required documents. Afterward, the car registration will be canceled and you will receive the Export Certificate. The required documents in this process are mentioned below:
- Passport copy of the person obtaining the vehicle in the final destination
- The original car registration card
- Car license plates
- Export insurance certificate
- Emirates ID and passport copy (both original and photocopies)
Remember that if the vehicle is not registered, you need to get an export vehicle test at the registered RTA testing centers. The testing center will see the chassis number on the car body against the number on the engine to guarantee that it is compatible.
They will later charge a fee for carrying out the test. If the vehicle is not registered under your name and instead under the company’s name, you also have to give the trade license of the company.
If your vehicle was purchased through a car loan, you need to submit the mortgage release letter. This letter is given to you by the bank after paying off the outstanding loan charge.

After canceling the car registration
After you have collected all the needed documents, go to the RTA and make sure that the car license plates are with you. Submit both things to the dedicated department. If there are any outstanding fines on the vehicle, you have to pay that too. At this point, your car registration will be annulled and you will gain the Export Certificate.
With this certificate, you have the choice to have temporary export plates for the vehicle. These plates can be utilized for driving legally in the UAE for only 15 days. In these 15 days, you have to finish the remainder of the shipping procedure. The price of the Export Certificate along with the temporary export plates is AED 90. If you do not want the plates, the charges will be AED 20.
Exporting the vehicle
After canceling the registration, search for shipping agents who will handle all the processes and required documents to export it from Dubai customs.
Make sure to pay the shipping agent fees, any taxes, or custom fees charged when the vehicle arrives at the final destination. You need to know all the charges and rules of the host country prior to exporting the vehicle.
Terms and conditions
Like any technical procedure, exporting the vehicle involves a number of conditions that need to be followed.
- Taking a pledge of allegiance from a certified showroom in Dubai, if the seller isn’t present
- The concerned person or his legal representative is present
- Install a Salik tag on the plates
- Instantly return the plates to RTA and avoid driving the car
- Driving the vehicle on domestic roads isn’t allowed. It’s only allowed on main roads leading to other countries
- The probability of utilizing the leftover insurance period to give export plates in case the car is registered
- Open a traffic file for the customer in case there’s no file in Dubai
- The export plates are subject to the provisions of the traffic laws when it comes to penalties and violations
