The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority(DEWA) has developed a smart universal charger for electric vehicles, announced the Dubai Media Office on November 20, 2020. With an aim to make charging electric vehicles easier, the charger will have a single cable and plug that fits all. The latest invention is currently under the process of obtaining a patent, their tweet stated:
The smart charger is powered by artificial intelligence which allows its system to automatically adapt the plug to the requirement of the cars. The invention has helped drivers the hassle of keeping their cables and the fuss of AC and DC charging methods.
Talking of the benefits involved with the auto-adaptive system, Hamad Mohamed AlBesher, R&D Researcher in smart grids integration stated:
“The new system includes an optical identification system, a camera, a microprocessor unit, and an AI programme that can recognise the vehicle plate number and identify the appropriate type of plug for the vehicle through the stored database and give the order to the system to activate the required charging system.”
Without any external interference, the whole system revolves around a research project on human-centric electric vehicle charging stations, stated Dr Edwin Rodriguez-Ubinas, Co-inventor and Senior Researcher at DEWA R&D Centre. He said:
“The project aims to find innovative solutions to challenges faced by customers during the traditional charging process in stations with standard, fast and non-straightforward services.”
To initiate the project, DEWA will issue special cards to the Electric Vehicle Green Charger subscribers .
The smart universal charger is not all DEWA has underway, the research facility has four other projects currently under process for a patent. Managing Director(MD) and Chief Executive Officer(CEO), DEWA, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, spoke about their scientific achievements and said:

Focusing on a consumer and environment friendly future, DEWA is working hand in hand with the government. So far, DEWA has been responsible for installing more than 270 Green Charger stations across Dubai. Registered in the Green Charger services, the services issued to private electric car holders who can charge their vehicles for free until the end of December 31, 2021. Applied only to public charging stations, commercial vehicles for organisations, companies, governmental and semi-governmental organisations can charge their vehicles for 29 fils/kWh.
