The 90th Geneva Motor Show has officially been cancelled amid the corona-virus crisis. Previously, we’ve seen a lot of brands showing off their new models, many of which have become popular cars for sale in Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately, this year we might have to make do with digital or exclusive launches.
This motor show was scheduled for 5th March to 15th March, however, the Swiss Government announced that events with over 1000 people will not be permitted to take place till 15th March this year. The announcement was made after the confirmed cases of corona-virus in Switzerland reached 15 as reported by The Independent.
The event was cancelled just a few days before it was supposed to start. The preparations had already been made and as per the event organizers, manufacturer stands were almost set up at the Palexpo convention centre. GIMS chairman Maurice Turrettini said in a statement, “We regret this decision, but the health of all participants is our and our exhibitors’ top priority. This is a case of force majeure and a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva. However, we are convinced that they will understand this decision”.
Although it is the only major motor show cancelled so far, there are also a few other events cancelled due to this reason such as Facebook F8 Developer Conference and GSMA’s Mobile World Congress.
Due to the cancellation, the organizers and manufacturers will have to face losses and might not do an exclusive event for their upcoming cars in 2020.
While there was a lot of anticipation around the cars that were to be displayed at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, it wouldn’t have been as exciting as before because many big brands like Ford, Nissan and Lamborghini did not plan to participate in the 2020 Geneva Motor Show.
The organizers have also announced that all bought tickets will be refunded. While we might not see the glitz and glam of this high-rated Motor Show soon, we still hope to see some amazing cars for sale in Abu Dhabi this year.
