Why Hybrid Cars Are So Hard to Find Used in the UAE

The gap is real — and it’s working against you

If you’ve been searching for a used hybrid among used cars in Dubai and feeling like nothing’s out there, you’re not imagining it. About 1 in 4 buyer searches on CarSwitch are for hybrids, but only about 1 in 100 listings actually is one. That mismatch is why prices stay firm and cars disappear fast. Here’s what’s behind it and how to give yourself a better shot.

The short version

  • Hybrid demand is roughly 25% of searches — but supply is barely 1% of listings. Prices won’t soften any time soon.
  • The Toyota C-HR and Camry hybrids are the most common hybrids you’ll find used. Set alerts for both.
  • A 2022 C-HR lists around AED 80,000 — about 19% less than new. That’s the sweet spot for value.
  • Don’t wait for a price drop. If you see a hybrid that passes inspection, act quickly.
  • City doesn’t matter much — price differences between Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah are under 2%.

Why used hybrids are so scarce in the UAE

Three things are squeezing supply at once. First, hybrids only started selling in meaningful numbers in the UAE around 2021–2022. Before that, petrol dominated. According to CarSwitch listings data (July 2026), petrol still makes up over 95% of listings every quarter. Hybrids peaked at about 3% of listings in late 2024 — and have hovered around 1% since.

Second, owners who bought hybrids tend to keep them. Fuel savings, lower servicing costs, and high resale value give people very little reason to sell. And third, the UAE’s new-car hybrid supply was itself limited until recently, so there just aren’t that many in circulation yet.

“When only 1 in 100 listed cars is a hybrid but 1 in 4 buyers is looking for one, you get a market where good hybrids sell within days,” says Imad Hammad, CEO and co-founder of CarSwitch.

What the numbers actually look like

From CarSwitch data
Hybrid share of buyer searches: 24.5%
Hybrid share of listings: 1.1% (as of recent quarters)
Supply–demand gap: 23.4 percentage points

That gap is the largest of any powertrain type on the platform. Electric cars have a much smaller version of the same problem — about 3% of listings versus modest search interest. But nothing matches the hybrid squeeze.

Used cars in the UAE: what hybrids actually cost

The Toyota C-HR is one of the more commonly listed hybrids. A 2022 model sits around AED 80,000 — roughly 19% less than its new price. The 2023 model lists around AED 83,500, about 16% off new. Even three-year-old models haven’t dropped much, because demand keeps propping them up.

The Camry hybrid follows a similar pattern. A 2023 Camry lists around AED 97,500, which is about 31% below new. That’s a bigger discount, but it’s also a pricier car to begin with. If you’re budget-conscious, the C-HR gives you a lower entry point.

Why prices aren’t coming down

In a normal used car market, prices ease as more cars age out. With hybrids, the pipeline is just too thin. Petrol cars made up 100% of CarSwitch listings through the first half of 2024. Hybrids only appeared in Q3 2024 at about 3% — then fell back to around 1%.

Until there are significantly more hybrids entering the used market, this won’t change. If you’re waiting for a price correction, you could be waiting a while.

What smart buyers are doing instead

1. Set alerts and move fast

When a hybrid hits CarSwitch, it doesn’t sit. Browse used cars for sale in Abu Dhabi or the Sharjah car market alongside Dubai. City-to-city price differences are under 2% — essentially the same — so widen your net geographically.

2. Consider the C-HR as your entry point

The 2022 C-HR around AED 80,000 is probably the most accessible hybrid on the market right now. It costs about a fifth less than new, and with around 45,000 km it’s well within its reliable years.

3. Look at the hybrid-adjacent option

If you can’t find the right hybrid, a fuel-efficient four-cylinder petrol car is the next closest thing. Four-cylinder cars make up about a third of all listings, so you’ll have plenty to pick from. And a base-trim model runs about 7% less than a fully loaded one — a real saving if fuel economy is your main goal and you can skip the extras.

4. Prioritise inspection-verified cars

Because hybrid supply is tight, some buyers feel pressure to jump on anything available. Don’t skip the inspection. Hybrid battery condition matters, and it’s not something you can judge from a listing photo. Every car on CarSwitch goes through a thorough inspection so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Is it worth buying new instead?

Possibly, if availability is your main pain point. A new C-HR costs around AED 99,000. The used 2023 model saves you about AED 16,000. That’s a real saving, but if the right used one doesn’t show up for months, the time cost might outweigh the price difference.

A new Camry is around AED 142,000. The 2023 used version saves you over AED 44,000. That gap is big enough that waiting and watching makes financial sense — even if it takes patience.

The bottom line for used cars in the UAE

The hybrid market isn’t broken — it’s just early. Supply will grow as more hybrids age out of their first ownership cycle. But right now, you’re competing with a lot of other buyers for very few cars.

Your best move: set alerts on CarSwitch, check listings across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, and be ready to act when the right one shows up. Every listing is inspection-verified, with transparent pricing and real people to walk you through it.

Why are used hybrid cars so hard to find in the UAE?

Hybrids only started selling in real numbers around 2021–2022, so very few have entered the used market yet. On top of that, owners tend to hold onto them because of fuel savings and strong resale value. About 1 in 4 buyer searches are for hybrids, but only about 1 in 100 listings is one.

Are used hybrid prices expected to drop in the UAE?

Not soon. Supply is still very thin — hybrids make up roughly 1% of used listings. Until many more hybrids age out of first ownership, prices will stay firm because demand far outstrips what’s available.

What’s the most affordable used hybrid I can find in the UAE?

The Toyota C-HR is one of the more common and affordable options. A 2022 model lists around AED 80,000 on CarSwitch — about 19% less than the new price. It’s a solid entry point if you’re set on a hybrid.

Should I buy a new hybrid instead of waiting for a used one?

It depends on the model. A used 2023 Camry saves you over AED 44,000 compared to new — worth the wait. But a used 2023 C-HR only saves about AED 16,000, so buying new might make sense if you can’t find one used.
