Flat tires are one of the biggest pet peeves of drivers. However, all of that is about to end with Ford’s 2020 Explorer which comes with self-repairing tires that fix any punctures all on their own! Off-road enthusiasts can wait to see this car for sale in the UAE!
Pros: Drivers will never know what hit ‘em!
Although self-repairing tires are not exactly a new invention, Ford has made them lighter, more durable and more efficient. Behind this creation is Michelin itself, who designs tires for Ford, Chevrolet and Bolt.
These self-repairing tires are lined with a highly viscous substance that acts as a sealant to repair punctures. The action of the sealant is so natural that drivers do not notice anything as there are no reductions in pressure or stability.
Creating this viscous sealant was not an easy feat. It had to be designed with precision so that it does not gather at the base of the tire all the while ensuring that an airtight seal is made.
Although these Michelin designed tires do not require repairs for days, they do at some point need to undergo repair or replacement. This is particularly true if the sidewall is damaged.
This technology comes under many names, with Michelin calling it Selfseal while Continental, supplier to Volkswagen and Bentley amongst many others, call it ContiSeal.

The Cons: Comfort always comes at a cost
On average, a self-repairing tire costs an extra 99 AED ($27), making it an investment of over 367 AED ($100) for the average vehicle. While considering the price keep in mind that these tires can withstand punctures of up to 0.25 inchs.
While self-repairing tires function well in cases of punctures, it is actually run-flat tires that fare better when it comes to the sidewall. This is because they are capable of driving another 50 miles at 50 mph with a damaged sidewall and no pressure. A self-repairing tire, on the other hand, is not designed to do this.
