New traffic rules, applicable from July 1, have been announced, and they involve some of the car fines quadrupling! Drivers of new and used cars in Dubai, UAE will need to be more careful than ever from now on! A few weeks ago we learned that speedsters will be burning their pockets to pay the new speeding fines. Here is what is changing this week:
- Fine for jumping a red signal will climb from Dh 800 to Dh1000. Its current penalty of eight black points will change to twelve black points as well as confiscation of the vehicle for 30 days.
- Parking in an unjustified space will lead to a fine of Dh 1000 and six black points instead of the previous Dh 500 and four black points.
- The penalty for using a mobile phone while driving will see the biggest hike with Dh800 and four black points compared to the existing Dh200 and four black points.
- Another major violation causing accidents and deaths on roads has been overtaking from the road shoulder. Compared with existing Dh600 and six black points, offenders will soon be looking at a fine of Dh1000 and six black points.
- Protective car seats for children under the age of four years is also a requirement under the new rules. Motorists not abiding by the law will have to pay a fine of Dh400.
We all know these rules and fines are for our own safety and officials have confirmed it too! Major General Saif Al Zafeen, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police Operations and Director of Dubai Traffic Prosecution Council said the new laws and doubling of penalties are not about randomly slapping people with fines but actually aimed at protecting the lives of road users.
