Starting July 1, traffic fines in the UAE will see some major changes so drivers of new or used cars in Dubai need to be more careful. And if you are a smoker, you could be in extra trouble! The previous fine for the same offense was AED 500. From July 1, not only will the fine be doubled but drivers will also be charged with six black points on their licenses. The Dubai Police maintains that the punishment for people polluting the environment and causing fire hazards should be more strict. Considering the environmental damage it can cause, we totally agree! Last month Dubai Municipality gathered up to 30 kilograms of waste in a single day from the Sheikh Zayed Road alone. And that was ONLY cigarette waste!
Assistant Commander of Dubai Police, Major General Mohammed Al Zafeen commented that when drivers are pulled over for throwing a cigarette butt out of their car, they usually react with surprise or anger and start arguing that their offense was minor. Director of Dubai’s Fire and Rescue Department, Colonel Rashid Buflasa had a few words to add regarding the fire hazards. According to him, there are no doubts that cigarettes flung out of car windows are responsible for causing many of the fires witnessed on the motorway edge of roads.

Other than the patrol cars, CCTV center staff and street patrols will be on the task keeping a lookout for the offenders. Smoking drivers, there’s no escape for you now!
