UAE drivers should keep an eye on their speedometers as police has revised all the speed limits on the external and internal roads of Abu Dhabi. According to Abu Dhabi police officials, a decision has been made to eliminate the grace speed limits from the 12th of August next month. So, from the first week of August, all roads in Abu Dhabi will have the 20 km/h grace window removed! Those drivers who love speeding their new and used Dubai cars must watch out lest they suffer a fine!
Drivers in Abu Dhabi have a 20 km/h grace speed limit before the radar flashes. For example, if a driver is cruising at 100 km/h with a 80 km/h speed limit, the radar will not flash. But if the driver goes beyond the grace window, lets say, at 101 km/h, the radar will flash and you would have to pay a fine.
Currently, on external roads, the speed limit is 120 km/h and drivers can go upto 140 km/h before the radar flashes. So, as of now, the drivers get an extra 20 km/h grace speed limit buffer on each road.
According to the police authorities, the radars will be kept on different roads as per the updated speed limits due to the new change in policy. Commander in Chief of Abu Dhabi police, Major General Mohammad Khalfan Al Romaithi said that the change in policy was imposed after studies related to road accidents and traffic density was conducted.
Last year, motorists wondered if the grace window would be kept or not as new traffic laws were anticipated. However, Thomas Edelman, managing director of RTA, confirmed that the grace speed limit would be kept. But looks like UAE has finally taken on the “what-you-see-is-what-you-get” approach like other countries.
In addition to the change in policy, Abu Dhabi will also launch broad awareness campaigns to educate the public regarding the amended speed limits and elimination of grace speed limits on the external and internal roads of Abu Dhabi.
The police authorities hope that drivers will cooperate with traffic police and follow the amendment in speed limits which will be implemented according to the international standards of road safety.
