While it’s hard to rank different BMW engines, we have listed here some engines that really stand out. In fact, some of the company’s powertrains are counted among the most impressive engines ever seen. CarSwitch.com, an online marketplace to buy any car in Dubai, talks about the best performance engines BMW has ever built.
S62
The S62 engine is the BMW M high-performance variant of the M62. The M62 is a naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine that was made from 1995 to 2005 and it boasts an aluminium engine block and a single row timing chain. The S62 features double-row timing chains, electronically actuated throttle bodies, and VANOS-controlled hollow camshafts. It also has a semi-dry-sump lubrication system that makes use of additional scavenging oil pumps. Double VANOS was used on some specialized M engines such as the S50B32 Euro and McLaren F1’s S70/2 V12. It could produce 394 horsepower and 269 lb. ft. of torque.
S63
The S63 made a debut about a decade after the release of the S62. It was developed from the N63, which is a twin-turbo V8 petrol engine which has been in manufacturing from 2008 to present. The N63 is the first production car engine in the world to feature a “hot-vee” layout, with the turbochargers placed inside the “V” of the engine. It is also the automaker’s first turbocharged V8 engine. The S63 M model made an appearance with the first generation X5 and X6 M in 2010. The most recent version is the S63B44T4 which made a debut with the 2018 M5. It outputs 617 horsepower and 553 lb. ft. of torque. Pistons and internals get better with each upgrade and so does high-pressure direct injection.

S85
The S85 is a naturally aspirated V10 petrol engine that was introduced in place of the S62 V8 engine for the M5 model and was made from 2005 to 2010. It was the automaker’s first and only production V10 engine and also the first V10 engine that was available in a production sedan. It was inspired by the company’s involvement with Formula One and first introduced E60 M5. Unlike other BMW M engines, it is not related to a regular production engine. The engine has dual overhead camshafts with double-VANOS and four valves per cylinder. The cylinder head and engine block are made from aluminium alloy. Its peak power is 500 horsepower and peak torque is 520 Nm.

S54
The S54 was touted as the high-performance equivalent to the M54, which was a naturally aspirated straight-6 petrol engine built from 2000 to 2006. In reality, though, it shares only some parts with the M54 and actually has more in common with the BMW S50. Like the S50, the engine block is based on cast iron. The S54 has no direct successor as the new generation of the M3 it underpinned is fuelled by the BMW S65 V8 engine.
