Police are taking quite an innovative approach to improve road safety in Dubai. Drivers of used cars in Dubai will now experience a different type of Zebra crossing!
A 3D walkway has been installed by Ras Al-Khaimah Police on Muhammad Bin Salim Road to prevent reckless driving and ensure the safety of pedestrians in the area.
Brigadier Ahmad Al Sam Al Naqbi, director of the traffic and patrols department of Ras Al Khaimah Police, who launched the initiative, stated that the project aims to reduce the number of traffic accidents on this road.
“This vital road [Mohammad Bin Salim] is especially busy with pedestrians during the evening time, and coupled with low visibility, puts the lives of people at risk. But with the smart walkways, which has been implemented at a low cost around the world, we aim to improve road safety for pedestrians,” said Brig Al Nabqbi.
The 3D zebra crossing functions as an optical illusion, creating the look of a walkway that pops out at drivers.
According to Road Safety UAE, around 18% of road-related deaths are caused by drivers crashing into pedestrians.
How to drive as you approach a Zebra Crossing
- The yield signs you see at zebra crossings must be obeyed and mean that pedestrians have right of way.
- You must slow down or stop to make way for pedestrians to cross the road.
- If you see that pedestrians are already crossing, then you must stop to make way for them.
- Be mindful, considerate and cautious when you drive near the crossing.
