Cars are definitely getting bigger and fiercer, but there was a time when fuel wasn’t plentiful and the cars came in smaller fun-sized packets. These cutesy rides filled a whole other niche. CarSwitch.com, the first marketplace for certified used cars Dubai, has put together a list of some tiny cars that once ruled the roads!

  1. 1953 BMW Isetta

This is probably one of the smallest cars that BMW produced. The “bubble windowed” car was just 90 inches in length. Its specs were even more simple and resembled those of a motorcycle. The car had a one-stroke cylinder that eked out 13 hp from a 24 cc motorcycle engine.

The Peel P50 had a rear wheel and no reverse and a handle on the back allowed the car to be maneuvered. The one-door coupe was marketed to handle “one reasonably sized shopping back and one adult”.

  1. 1973 Reliant Robin

The Reliant Robin was a three-wheeled car that was the second most popular fiber-glass car by the Reliant Motor Company of the UK. The 1973 version had a 750 cc engine but the later improvements included an engine increase to 850 CCs.

  1. 1998 Smart Fortwo

With a length of 100 inches, two of these tiny cars could squeeze in one parking spot. The car is a rear-engine drive that was introduced in 46 countries worldwide. The engines of the original smart fortwo were turbocharged and came with three cylinders. The basic petrol engine was a 599 cc whereas the turbo engine had a 799 cc boost.

Even though tiny cars have long gone out of fashion, it is nice to look back at how the simpler times got us to the era of the power-packed Ferrari’s and the Lamborghini’s.
