Tesla has launched Model Y and it looks like it may be Tesla’s best selling car yet! According to sources, Model Y is based on Model 3 and up to 75% of its components are based on the average mass-market sedan. Model Y is an all-electric SUV and hopes to win consumers looking for a similar alternative in the market. CarSwitch has the following details of the grand launch!
Talking to the crowd and the media, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla said, “It has the functionality of an SUV, but it will ride like a sports car”. He further added, “This thing will be really tight on corners and we expect it will be the safest midsize SUV in the world by far.”
The Model Y is a seven-seater, has a panoramic glass roof and a 15-inch touchscreen panel for handling the car controls. Similar to model 3, it has most of the tech clusters removed.
Apart from having the potential to be Tesla’s top-selling car, Model Y is also gearing up to be an important product to generate enough revenue to pay off the massive debts incurred by the company over the years.
Tesla was able to secure its survival with the launch of the Model 3 sedan in 2017, but an SUV could have an even greater public appeal, given how SUVs are becoming increasingly popular in Canada, US, and Europe.
But, since most SUVs do run on gas, Model Y remains an option only for those looking for an all-electric SUV. Tesla’s main rivals in the still budding electric market are most likely going to be Mercedes Benz-EQC and possibly, the Jaguar-I-Pace.
If the Model Y is expected to be Tesla’s most profitable vehicle, it has to achieve high standards in terms of execution, delivery, and performance.
And Tesla is ready to buckle up for the race and claims to deliver the performance, the rear-wheel-drive, the all-wheel drive and dual versions of the Model Y by the fall of 2020. The standard version is expected to see the light of the day in spring 2021.
The dual motor and the all-wheel drive version will start at $51,000 (187, 330 AED). The performance version that boasts of a 0-60 time in 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 150 mph, will be priced at $60, 000 (220, 389 AED).
The All-Electric SUV standard version has a price tag of $39, 000 (143, 252 AED) and is claimed to go as far as 230 miles on one single charge. The long-range model, on the other hand, has a range of 300 miles on a single charge and starts at $49, 000 (179, 984 AED).
