Tesla is doing remarkably well for itself considering that its Electric SUV and model X helped Tesla bump out a total of 100,000 cars in 2017! Tesla’s model X is the main profit-maker for Tesla. The race to the finish line doesn’t just stop there for Tesla as there are many more Teslas “under construction”, such as the newly conceived model Y, which is marketed to be a mass-market version of the more classy model X. But even though, Tesla has made its mark with the edgy marketing and a celebrity cum founder, its price point is still its biggest drawback. This is where other car makers may actually become the tortoise to Tesla’s rabbit!
The Jaguar-1 is a strong contender against Tesla’s model X
Where the model-X sells in the range, AED 250,000-280,000, the Jaguar I-pace sells roundabout AED 195,000. Not to mention, if you are looking for an electric luxury SUV with good specs and aesthetics, then paying less for a Jaguar-I pace would certainly hurt less. Unless Tesla can reel its “loyal to the brand” customers fast enough, other automakers will keep on hitting the Tesla train. It’s what every automakers dreams of at some time. You don’t care about Mercedes specs if you want a Porsche. Tesla is struggling to be just there yet and with every passing model of its own and its competitor, it’s starting to bruise a little.
The Chevy Bolt isn’t too costly, either
The Chevy Bolt is often compared to Tesla’s model 3 as a potential competitor. The Bolt has a base price of AED 137,745 and Chevy is actually selling it for that price and below even. The model X on the other hand is around AED 161, 620 and the final price could cost the buyer 220,390 dirhams! So, it seems that Tesla doesn’t really have a “mass-market EV in the market just yet”, especially with that price point. Though, Chevy certainly does in the compact hatchback segment.
Is Tesla enough?
Tesla has made a market for itself, not just in Dubai, but worldwide over luxury electric vehicles. But with just model S and X to sell, it can’t do much about the people who want a smaller SUV or a larger sedan. If other automakers follow in the footsteps of Jaguar and Chevy, they will make their own EVs for segments that Tesla hasn’t created.
Looks like a Tesla is only a Tesla – until a better offer comes along that Tesla can’t beat. Competition from more economical rivals, segmentation problems, brand loyalty and even manufacturing capacity are some of the obstacles that Tesla has to overcome before it becomes the undisputed champion of electric vehicles.
