There is nothing more frustrating than having your beautiful, shiny ride look like a war survivor! Yes, we are talking about those pesky scratches that become the unwanted fate of every ride. Scratches decrease the resale value of your car and it becomes difficult to sell car in Dubai. By following these CarSwitch.com tips, you can remove the scratches from your car at home!
Before you start
Determine the scratch depth: After you notice that the car has some scratches, you need to figure how deep the scratch is. That will determine how you approach repairs. Your car has four main layers of paint: clear coat, color, primer and steel. If the scratch is in the surface coat area, then it might be easily repaired. But if it is a deeper gash, then the answer might not be in home repair.
What you’ll need:
- Warm water
- Microfibre towel
- Sponge
- Rubbing alcohol
- 2000 grit sandpaper
- Carnauba wax
Let’s get started!
- Wash and dry the car completely: Keeping the car clean is a must during scratch repair to prevent further scratching. Spray the area with water to get any debris out of the scratch.
- Sand the scratchy surface lightly: Wrap the 3000 wet/grit sandpaper around a pad and sand the surface coat lightly. There are a couple of tips to keep in mind while sanding.
i) Sand in the direction of the scratch, so that opposing scratches don’t create
further scratches.
ii) Rinse the area frequently with water. This will allow you to see the depth of the scratch.
iii) Avoid getting dirt or debris between the sandpaper and car to prevent scratching. - Put isopropyl alcohol on the scratched surfaces: Alcohol or any other rubbing compound can be used to smooth the paint surface to get it ready for waxing.
- Polish the affected area with rubbing compound/alcohol: Take a soft, clean sponge and move it around the area for approximately 10-12 seconds. Polishing with rubbing compounds needs to be done quickly as they can quickly evaporate.
- Wash the area: This is done to remove the rubbing compound residue from the car.
- Wax the surface: Use a good quality carnauba wax to seal the area you have just recovered.
- Finish off by washing the area one last time: Make sure all of the scratches are repaired by washing the area once again.
