What makes James Bond the coolest spy ever? Is it the super gadgets or the stylish suits? Nope, that’s not quite it. Here at CarSwitch, we believe it’s his awesome car collection that takes the cake! Let us introduce you to seven cars from the Bond movies that can help you make up your mind.
1. Aston Martin DB5
Die-hard fans agree that Bond is an Aston Martin man, but not many people know that the famous car company and the filmmakers weren’t always so chummy. Took a fair bit of convincing on the part of filmmakers to get access to their cars. Good thing it worked out because DB5 became an overnight sensation. Later, it made on-and-off appearances in numerous Bond movies, including a breathtaking cameo in Skyfall (2012). In 2010, the DB5 was sold for a whopping three million pounds.
2. Aston Martin V12 Vanquish
In Die Another Day (2002) Aston Martin V12 Vanquish roared onto the screen making Pierce Brosnan’s Bond the first to drive two different Aston Martins. Not only was it heavily armed, it was also equipped with a cloaking device that allowed it to become invisible at the push of a button. Pretty cool, right! If you are an Aston Martin person like Bond you will absolutely love this Harrods display.
3. Aston Martin DBS V12
Casino Royale (2006) was the first Bond movie to feature two Aston Martins. It included a special appearance by DB5 and introduced the DBS. It was also the movie where Daniel Craig’s Bond made his first appearance. DBS’s high-speed accident was one of the most memorable scenes in the movie, leading the car to flip and roll seven times – a world record! The opening scene of Quantum of Solace (2008) saw the return of DBS in a high-speed chase.
4. Aston Martin DB10
Daniel Craig’s Bond found himself behind the wheel of yet another Aston Martin in 2015’s Spectre. A vehicle especially commissioned for the movie, DB10 was built in-house by Aston Martin’s design and engineering teams with special input from the movie’s director, Sam Mendes. This one is definitely a looker!
5. Lotus Esprit S1
After the Aston Martins, the name most commonly associated with 007 is the Lotus Esprit S1. Affectionately called “Wet Nellie” because it’s capable of transforming into a submarine, this Lotus model appeared in one of the classic Bond movies The Spy Who Loved Me (1977). We are loving the cool gadgets on this ride, especially the anti-aircraft missiles.
6. Toyota 2000GT
Japan’s first supercar was the obvious choice for You Only Live Twice (1967), a Bond movie set mainly in that country. The interesting thing is…Toyota produced a specially modified open-top version for Sean Connery’s Bond who couldn’t fit under the coupe’s low roof. Imagine that!
7. Ford Mustang Mach1
Not to be left behind, Ford Motors also partnered with the Bond filmmakers for several installments. The most notable was their Ford Mustang Mach1 in Diamonds are Forever (1971). Want to know why? It featured in one of the best car chases where Connery managed to drive it sideways through an alley in Las Vegas. Doesn’t get better than that!
