How to run the RTA vehicle status check — step by step

1. Open the Dubai REST app (iOS or Android) or go to the Dubai Police website. Look for “Vehicle Status Inquiry” under Traffic Services.
2. Enter the plate details — plate category (e.g. private), plate code (the letter), and plate number. You don’t need the chassis number for this step.
3. Review the report. It loads in seconds. You’ll see sections for traffic fines, accident history, insurance validity, registration status, and any mortgage or loan registered against the car.
4. Screenshot everything. If the seller claims a clean history and the report says otherwise, you have your answer.

No complicated steps. The whole thing takes less time than parking at a showroom.

What the report actually shows — and what it doesn’t

What you’ll see

• Accident records: Whether the car has been in a reported accident in Dubai. Minor or major — both show up.
• Outstanding fines: Any unpaid traffic fines still linked to the plate. These are the seller’s responsibility, but make sure they’re cleared before transfer.
• Insurance status: Whether the car is currently insured. If it’s not, that’s a red flag — it may have been sitting unregistered.
• Mortgage status: Whether a bank loan is still secured against the vehicle. You cannot transfer ownership until the mortgage is cleared.
• Registration expiry: When the current registration runs out. An expired registration means another cost coming your way.

What it won’t tell you

The RTA report doesn’t cover mechanical condition, paint repairs, odometer tampering, or accidents that happened outside Dubai (including other emirates or abroad). That’s why a proper inspection still matters — the RTA check is one layer, not the whole picture.

How accident history affects price — the numbers

Sellers sometimes brush off a minor fender-bender as “nothing.” The market disagrees. According to CarSwitch listings data (July 2026), a car with a minor accident history is listed for about 9% less than the same car with a clean record. Meanwhile, cars with a major accident history also sit lower — though with fewer listings to draw from, the gap is harder to pin down precisely.

Other things that shift the price: whether the car still has its manufacturer warranty adds around 5% to the asking price. And a fully loaded car runs about 7% higher than a base-spec version of the same model.

What to do with the results

Clean report, no mortgage, no fines? Good start. Move on to an in-person inspection — mechanical, structural, the full 200-point kind.

Minor accident on record? Don’t walk away automatically. But know that the car is worth less. Use the roughly 9% gap as your reference point when you negotiate.

Mortgage still active? The seller needs to clear this before you can transfer. If they can’t, or won’t show you the clearance letter, step away. There’s no workaround.

Expired insurance or registration? Factor in those renewal costs. And ask why the car has been sitting idle — there may be a reason it wasn’t being driven.

The RTA tool is free and useful. But it only covers what’s been officially reported in Dubai. A car that was repaired privately after a crash won’t show anything. A rolled-back odometer won’t trigger a flag.
