Quality, style and comfort are the top considerations when buying a car in Dubai, but have you ever wondered how long your car should be. Well, someone did and it led to the creation of the world’s longest car in the Guinness Book of World Records. It’s known as the ‘American Dream’.
This 26-wheeled limousine consisted of many lavish accessories like a king size waterbed, a jacuzzi and most surprising of all – a helicopter landing pad. A car collector and car builder for television and films, Jay Ohrberg created this car for the purpose of commercial use. Built on the design of 1970s Cadillac Eldorado, this car was created at Ohrberg’s Hollywood Cars Shop in the late 1980s.
As appealing as the car may seem, hauling this car was not an easy task. It was built to go straight only or bend in the middle with two separate drivers handing the front and the rear. To drive this beast, the drivers needed to coordinate each turn and you can imagine how hard it would be even if there was a slight miscommunication. Unfortunately, this display car was not considered road legal. Even with its tag of the ‘world’s longest vehicle’, it had to meet its eventual demise. Where it should have been a ride for the celebs and royals to drive, it was eventually leased to a company as a promotional vehicle. Once the lease was over, it was put into a New Jersey warehouse to rot as it was hard to maintain. The vehicle gained attention at an auction in 2012 but it was severely damaged.
Though in 2014, the New York’s Autoseum Automotive Teaching Museum bought the car at the auction and there have been claims that they are working on the restoration of the ‘American Dream’. As per the staff, it could take years before it is fully restored. Though, if it was to be sold for personal use it might’ve been the most expensive car for sale.
We’re still waiting for the longest car to come back to life, though it might take a little too much time. If you’re looking to buy a used car anytime soon, be sure to visit CarSwitch.com.
