It is easier than you think.
Safety First:
Pull your car to a safe location so that it is away from traffic. Turn on the hazard lights to keep other drivers informed.
Block Movement:
If you have a manual transmission car you need to make sure the car doesn’t move while you change the tire. Either fix a wheel wedge onto the tire or place a rock behind all tires.
Things you will need:
Make sure you have a jack, lug wrench, fully inflated spare tire, and vehicle owner’s manual in the car trunk. These are a must if you want to be equipped to change your car’s tire yourself.
Steps
- Lug nuts: In order to unscrew the lug nuts make sure to remove the hubcap if you have one installed. Put the lug wrench in place on the nuts and unscrew. Let the nuts remain in their position until you decide to remove the tire completely
- Jack placement: Place the jack firmly against the car’s frame adjacent to the flat tire. Make sure the jack is firmly planted, now lift your car with the help of the jack. Many often lift the car before removing the lug nuts, but that won’t work! So don’t forget to remove lug nuts.
- Remove and Replace: Remove the lug nuts completely and unmount the flat tire. Replace it with the spare tire by aligning it with the lug bolts and gently push it into position thereby exposing the bolts through the rim. Screw the lug nuts back onto the tire and tighten them further once you have lowered the car back on the ground.
- Air Pressure: After changing the tire make sure to drive to the nearest service station to check the air pressure of your spare tire and ensure that it has been installed correctly.
These steps are easy to follow and once you have changed a flat tire once you will be able to do it again, though we’re hoping you wouldn’t need to.
