Whether you are cruising around in your newly bought ride, or getting ready to sell car in Dubai, the worst scenario is when you are stopped by the traffic authorities for a routine license check-up and you don’t have one! Argh! If you are one of those unlucky people who have lost their driver’s license, then follow the guidelines here to get a new license and avoid the fines!
How do I get started?
First off, if you have lost your driving license in Dubai, you cannot drive without it. There is a fine of 100 AED if you’re caught doing so!
The good news is that it is relatively easy to get a replacement. According to the new rules, you don’t need to register the lost license with the police. You can simply go to the RTA (Road and Transport Authority) office and apply for a substitute.
The Required Documentation
The process for replacement is quite simple and will take less than 30 minutes of your time. The RTA office in Dubai will give you a token number requesting necessary documents. The must-have documents include the passport copy, a passport sized photograph(s), residency visa and an Emirates ID copy. If your license is more than five years old, you may have to retake the eye test as per the new rules declared by UAE’s ministry of interior. This is a change from the previous ten-year rule.
The RTA, then requires you to pay a standard service fees which is 120 AED. As a reminder, you will likely need to also pay off any outstanding traffic penalties. And you are done! So, don’t fret if you are an unlucky “license loner”. A visit to the RTA and following their guidelines is all you need to do to get a new one.
