Businesses and companies all around the world are searching for mechanisms to prevent coronavirus from spreading. Ford is one of the first companies in the auto-industry to come up with something that considerably hinders the spread of the virus.
The test run of Ford’s software was conducted at the Police Interceptor Utility and the results proved to be successful. The software operates by tweaking the temperatures; it temporarily increases the temperature of the vehicle to about 133 degrees Fahrenheit/56 Degree Celsius. The increased temperature is maintained for about 15 minutes, this reduces the footprint of the virus by 99 percent. Ford conducted several test runs to determine the optimum temperature to be utilized by this software.
When the software is activated, it makes use of the vehicle’s powertrain along with the climate control system. These systems work alongside to raise the temperature inside the vehicle. Since the software increases the engine’s temperature to an elevated level, this enables heat and fan settings to automatically operate on a high. The software then analyses the interior temperature within the vehicle until the entire vehicle reaches the desired level. After this is done, the increased temperature is maintained for 15 minutes to prevent the spread of virus.
The staff at Ford revealed that they joined efforts with The Ohio State University to establish an optimum temperature range and the time required to maintain this temperature to considerably reduce the imprint of the virus. To ensure that the software proved a success in all vehicles it was activated in, Ford conducted test runs on several vehicles.
The vehicles tested were owned by the New York City Police Department (NYPD), and several tests were also conducted on those owned by Los Angeles Police Department. Safe to say, the police were impressed with the results of Ford’s newest invention.
Jeff Jahnes and Jesse Kweiek, the laboratory supervisors that supervised the entire invention at The Ohio State University said “Our studies with Ford Motor Company indicate that exposing coronaviruses to temperatures of 56 degrees Celsius, or 132.8 degrees Fahrenheit, for 15 minutes reduces the viral concentration by greater than 99 percent on interior surfaces and materials used inside Police Interceptor Utility vehicles.”
