When it comes to BMW M2, it seems as if the engineers took an old compact coupe and transformed it into a superior version. And when they still weren’t happy with the result, they further developed it to the 3533 pounds M2 CS. For all the sports car enthusiasts, M2 CS will get them excited with it’s fiery acceleration, 444-hp engine, and how it nails corners.
The vehicle is a result of adaptation and genius tweaking. But is the M2 CS as good as the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS? The GTS 4.0 offers all the right stuff. With the engine mounted in the middle, 2-seater model and 3231 pounds, it can make anyone smile. This sports car is fueled by a 4-liter V-6 engine that delivers 394 ponies and sings to a 7800 rpm redline.
The 2021 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and 2020 BMW M2 CS are said to offer similar driving experiences according to the test numbers. However, the actual differences are displayed when they are tested on the road. The Porsche 718 is sophisticated yet BMW M2 CS is playful.
It’s usually more engaging to shift yourself instead of letting the car swap gears. But the cars we are reviewing are unique. Both automakers’ dual-clutch automatic transmission shifts faster than any driver can.
Moreover, the software of gearboxes is smart enough to change the gears by remembering the driver’s preferences. If you want to achieve a closer connection, grab the steering wheel paddles. Both vehicles are equipped with launch control to decrease stress.
The Cayman GTS 4.0 revs the naturally aspirated V-6 to 6600 rpm and then slips the smooth clutch to benefit from the traction of its Pirelli P Zero PZ4s. You can literally drive however you want and fulfill your driving desires. It needs 3.4 seconds to reach 60 mph.

The high-speed program of BMW isn’t this innovative. When you launch the car at the default rpm redline, it’s the twin-turbocharged 3-liter engine will enlighten the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. You can adjust the launch rpm by clicking the cruise control toggle. If you are on the asphalt, then a minimum of 1900 rpm is suggested so that the tires can function properly.
The run to 60 mph is achieved in 3.6 seconds and if the 6-speed transmission is applied, the distance is covered in 3.9 seconds instead. The handling of M2 truly shines if you adjust to a high seating position and an upright windshield. Even if it’s steering wheel diameter is a bit bigger, the real feel emerges from the thick rim.
The passengers can feel some jabs, jolting, and noise while seated inside but this lack is covered by precision and steering feedback. Stuck between the BMW’s powerful 444-hp engine and sticky rubber tires, the back squirms under pressure caused by hard acceleration. As the BMW’s car logbook says “Playful, alive, and devilishly imperfect”, the squirming effect is felt going throughout the body.
Not only does the Cayman’s looks scream sports car, it’s inside reflects the same spirit. The cabin features a great seating position and a thin steering wheel. With a low roof, raked windshield, and center tachometer, the Cayman boasts an exotic look. It’s steering has an excellent response and it effortlessly changes direction.
Moreover, it almost matches with M2 by skidpad grip despite having milder rubber. But unlike the M2 CS, the rear end of the Cayman does not squirm, particularly when it starts riding on 5000 feet. Although there is no turbo surge in Cayman as seen in GTS, there is an ideally tuned throttle.
You can approach and ride the limit without any hesitation due to its talent of dialing in the engine. Even if you keep increasing the speed, the handling, chassis, or any other component will not be overburdened.
Both are equipped with steel springs and adaptive dampers which guarantee a stable yet fun ride quality. But the Cayman is comfier. The stopping ability of Porsche is better due to the firm brakes, 149-foot stop, and stability. The M2 can not compete with the sound and intake screams of the Cayman.
