Sad that you missed the Bahrain Grand Prix last Sunday? Don’t worry, the racing season is just getting started and gearheads in the UAE couldn’t be more excited! For all the car racing fans in Dubai, UAE, and for the uninitiated, here is a quick primer on all the racing action to come. Together, the first three events make up the coveted “Triple Crown of Motorsports”, the place where billionaires and celebrities rub shoulders.
Monaco Grand Prix
Bringing a new and exciting dimension to the world of motorsports was the first Monaco Grand Prix in 1929. It features fast, Formula 1 cars running around the streets of Monte Carlo on a tight, narrow and twisting circuit that also includes a tunnel. What could be more thrilling than that? Maneuverability is the key for cars participating in this event which is why it was dominated by the agile Bugattis in the early days. The event is scheduled for 28th May this year.
Fun Fact: Six-time winner of the Monaco Grand Prix, Ayrton Senna is considered the greatest racing drivers of all time.
Indy 500
If you were wondering what ‘The Greatest Spectacle in Racing’ was, this is it! Beginning in 1911, the Indy 500 is still held every year typically on the last weekend of May. It has witnessed some of the highest speeds achieved in circuit racing with the cars virtually flying around the track at speeds of more than 320 km/h. With 500 miles and 200 laps, and big money on the line, spectators can expect some grueling competition.
Fun Fact: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is home to this racing event and there is an on-site museum filled with the cars of the past 500 winners.
24 Hours of Le Mans
If bitter personal rivalries and professional competition is what you like about racing, then there’s nothing better than this endurance race. Competing in teams of three, racers must balance speed with endurance to complete this 24-hour race. For one complete day in June, come dusk or dawn, rain or shine, the Circuit de la Sarthe in the French countryside is alive with the symphony of revving car engines. Check out these cool Ferrari racing cars that have won several Le Mans titles.
Fun Fact: Spectators don’t just gather for the racing event. There is plenty of action off the tracks as well, including carnival rides, food vendors, and sideshows.
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Abu Dhabi is the place to be if you want to catch the F1 season finale! The most glamorous weekend of the year is hosted in November at one of Abu Dhabi’s crown jewel, the Yas Marina Circuit. Trackside you will get to witness some of the greatest names in motorsport, live in action, racing wheel-to-wheel in their Formula 1 cars. It’s a spectacle unlike any other!
Fun Fact: Yas Marina has a waterfront setting scenic enough to rival the likes of Singapore and Monaco and since the race is the only day-night event on the Formula 1 calendar you will also get to witness the sun setting in the background. Bonus!
Take our word for it, racing enthusiasts will be glued to the television screens for these events. And if they plan their vacations right, who knows, there might even be a few lucky folks who get to watch the action live.
