Bentley has announced yet another addition to their hybrid range with the addition of new Bentley Flying Spur, flamed to be the company’s latest luxury model; the company itself seems to be headed away from combustion engines toward a more eco friendly approach to their vehicles.
The new Flying Spur introduces an innovative third powertrain delivering the most environmentally friendly Bentley to date. Powertrain and Driving
New powertrain couples a 2.9 liter V6 engine with an electric motor to deliver a total of 536 bhp and 750 Nm of torque, the vehicle is said to have the capacity to cover over 700 km on a single tank.
In terms of performance, it gives little away to Flying Spur V8 in acceleration, capable of reaching 100 kmph from a standstill in 4.3 seconds, the new powertrain is said to significantly reduce fuel consumption while still providing the same refined Bentley experience.
This new Bentley not only retains the Bentley heritage but also incorporates industry leading intelligent and intuitive equipment customized for effortless and natural experience. Now the connected car services among other options will include My Battery Charge, My Car Statistics and My Cabin Comfort as well.
Furthermore, to provide feedback to the driver, the instrument cluster will include additional information regarding drive mode and EV related functions. Meanwhile the start/stop switch has been replaced with a control for 3 E-Drive modes EV Drive, Hybrid Mode and Hold Mode, which allows the driver flexibility to choose their preferred setting to drive in, EV Drive is engaged as soon as the car is switched on by default which boasts electric driving capabilities, this is ideal for short journeys and city driving.
Apart from the mode information the flow of energy can also be displayed via the infotainment screen where statistics are displayed along with the adjustable charging timers for the vehicle.
Additional info such as Range, Battery level and charging info is available to the driver in heads up display, centre screen and their instrument panel.
There isn’t much visual difference to be seen in the Hybrid Flying Spur except the ‘Hybrid’ front fender badge, quad oval tailpipes and covered universal charging point on the left-hand rear fender.
Various Modes
The multiple drive options available to the driver for power management for the journey can also be managed by the car itself.
EV Drive
This is the default mode of the car and maximizes the electric experience, for short city rides.
Hybrid
This mode taps into the intelligent navigation system and maximizes the power efficiency and range. This is best suited for long journeys which use predictive E-mode and engine coasting.
As the driver inputs a new destination the car itself will automatically correct and engage the correct drive mode for best efficiency for each part of the journey, constantly calculating the best use of battery charge and storing electrical energy for lengths where it’s most useful such as when arriving in a city.
The system reduces on-board charge to zero just as the vehicle reaches its destination, maximizing overall efficiency.
Hold
This mode is used to always hold a high voltage battery charge to conserve electrical energy for later use. This is also the default mode when the driver selects sports mode to provide consistent boost and recuperation.
Customization
The Flying Spur Hybrid comes in seven Bentley paint colours to choose from as a standard, these have been carefully handpicked by professionals at Bentley to complement the character and style of the car.
However, customers can also choose from an additional extended range of over 60 colours, including Mulliner and personal commission.
