Did you know that in the UAE you have to renew your car’s registration every year? Wondering what the process involves and what documents you need? CarSwitch experts bring you the answer!
Where can I get my car’s registration renewed?
If you buy a car in Dubai, UAE through a dealer, they will take care of the registration for the first year. From the second year onwards, you will need to renew the registration yourself. RTA has plenty of conveniently located centers where you can renew your car’s registration. You can see the full list here.
What documents will I need?
First things first, you will need to ensure there are no outstanding fines on the car. If there are any unpaid traffic fines, pay them off through the Dubai Police website or pay them at the time of registration. However, if there are any pending black points on your car then you might have to visit Dubai Police before you can register your car.
To renew your car’s registration you will need three important documents; the motor vehicle insurance certificate, the old registration card, and a car test certificate stating that the car passed the examination.
What does the car registration renewal process involve?
Go to the Dubai Traffic department or Tasjeel Eppco, or Emarat Shamil to get the car tested and earn the ‘passed’ test certificate. This will typically cost around AED 120. New vehicles are exempted from the test for two consecutive years. The results of the test are electronically passed to the RTA.
At this point, you have two options
- In-person: Now, wait in line at the RTA location, pay the registration fees (AED 340) and then wait for the renewal of the registration. You will be handed the registration sticker with a new expiry date. Place that on the rear number plate over the old one, and voila, you are done!
- Online: Or you could try the online route by heading over to RTA’s website. There you simply select your vehicle, submit the relevant documents online and confirm a delivery method (either courier or collecting the registration at any of RTA’s offices). After you have paid the service fees, your application will be processed within five working days.
Can someone else renew my car’s registration on my behalf?
Don’t have the time for all this? Try RTA’s “Personal Appearance Service”. Visit the RTA’s customer service center once and receive a PIN on your mobile after registering your details. Using the PIN any person can do the licensing work at the RTA on your behalf whether it’s for one car or multiple cars in your name. Other transactions like exporting, transferring or selling the number plate can also be carried out using the PIN. Note, however, that the PIN expires after your representative’s visit. For further visits, you will need to get a new PIN via a “Personal Appearance Service”.
Hopefully, that answers all of your questions about the car registration renewal process.
