1st Generation: S30
This decades-long history initiates with the original Datsun 240Z. In 1970, it was manufactured as a reaction to the Toyota 2000 GT. However, this 2-seat, rear drive vehicle sold above 160,000 units within 4 years.
It had a 2.4 liter engine which delivered 151 hp, 4-speed transmission, and an independent suspension. With a top speed of 125 mph, it reached 60 mph in 8 seconds. All of this had a price tag of $3,526.
240Z was sold in 4 series. The first series started in late 1969 and ended in 1973. It’s recognized by 2 ventilation grilles and a badge. In 1974, the second series’ (260Z) chassis was strengthened, interior was revised, an optional 3-speed automatic was added and the engine was boosted to 2.6 litres.
The 3rd series aka 280Z, had it’s engine stoked to 2.8 liters. An optional 5-speed transmission, switch to Bosch electronic fuel injection, a bigger fuel tank and an extra rear tire was added. This generation sold 520,000 units globally.
2nd Generation: S130
The 280ZX had the goal of becoming a grand touring car instead of a sports car. This is why it was bigger, heavier and luxurious. A longer wheelbase, optimized tuning, high-speed stability, and a T-top-style roof are the plus sides of 280ZX.
In 1981, Turbo variant was introduced which boasted 180 horses, revised rear suspension, and a powerful naturally aspirated engine.
Only 7.4 seconds were needed to reach 60 mph. Even more changes were added to the suspension in the following year which further strengthened the chassis. It’s production ended in 1983 with 331,000 units sold.
3rd Generation: Z31
First Datsun badge was added in 1984. Aesthetic exterior changes and refined aerodynamics is significant. Efficiency and better weight distribution was possible due to the V6 engine. The naturally aspirated engine pumped out 165 hp whereas the turbo variant gave 200 hp.
Important warnings were given to the driver by a computerized vocal alert system. 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual were the options. This generation sold 329,900 units and it’s production ended in 1989.
4th Generation: Z32
1900 year saw the most remarkable style transformation and better performance. Longer wheelbase, slippery bodywork and new headlights lead to an exotic look. Due to improvements to the engine, the naturally aspirated model delivered 222 horses and the turbocharged engine gave 300 hp. The turbo variant boasted excellent performance, giving 155 mph of top speed and 5 seconds to reach 60 mph. The 4-wheel steering allowed better handling.
Not many changes were made in this generation. But in the 1993 model, a convertible version was introduced. Only 164,170 units were sold as Nissan increased the price.
5th Generation: Z33
Offering 287 hp, both 5-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmission were standard. A convertible version arrived in 2004. The 2003 model boasted 5 trim levels: Base, Enthusiast, Performance, Touring, and Track. Track had 18 inches wheels, Brembo brakes, an aerodynamic kit and more.
In 2006, a slight facelift was given and in the following year, a revised engine offered 306 hp. A Nismo 350Z was produced in the last years of production. This model provided 18 inches front wheels and 19 inches rear wheels, Yamaha suspension, rear Brembo brakes, lightweight Rays forged wheels and a dedicated Nismo exhaust system. For the North American market, 1,607 units were made and 150,000 units were sold in that region.
6th Generation: Z34
The 2009 year 370Z model looked similar to its predecessor but it had lower dimensions and was 88 pounds lighter than the 350Z. An increase in engine’s capacity gave 332 hp and 4.2 seconds needed to reach 60 mph. A Nismo 370Z introduced in 2009, a roofless Z car was offered by Roadster (2010 to 2019), 40th Anniversary Edition came out in 2010 and a 50th Anniversary Edition arrived in 2019.
A second part of 6th generation is 2023 Z which boasts modern technology, past versions inspired exterior, 400 hp and many more exciting additions.
