Times are changing and so is the car industry. An increasing number of manufacturers are veering into the electric category. In fact, some manufacturers are not only producing electric cars for sale but also electric trucks! However, it remains to be seen how they will compare to gas-fueled ones. So, if you are thinking about buying an electric truck anytime soon, there are a couple of things you must keep in mind.

Electric Trucks Are Not New

Battery powered trucks are not new, but the gas-powered alternatives have been more popular. Traditional fuels like diesel, gasoline, and natural gas offer more range capability right now. Moreover, electric trucks also take a very long time to get charged up. Other than that, battery systems also take up a lot of space. So, for now, gas trucks are probably here to stay. But electric trucks have undergone a huge transformation and might soon be in the spotlight.

Some Popular Gas-Fueled Trucks

There are many trucks worthy of getting mentioned here, but we will talk about just two. The first is the Chevy Silverado 1500 that delivers up to 12,200 pounds of towing capacity and 2,285 pounds of payload capacity. Another is the midsized Ford Ranger that offers up to 1,860 pounds of payload and 7,500 pounds of towing capacity.

The Electric Counterparts

Right now, options are kind of limited when it comes to electric trucks. Back in November 2019, the Rivian R1T was unveiled. It packs in a 180kwh battery and can travel 400 miles on a single charge. It delivers horsepower and 826 pound-feet of torque and has a towing capacity of 11,000 pounds. The Ohio-based company Workhorse also makes a hybrid called W-15 that go 80 miles on a single charge and can tow up to 5,000 pounds. For had also announced that it’s making the F-150 truck.

It Will Take Some Time For Electric Trucks To Catch Up

As you may have guessed by now, the towing capabilities of electric trucks are just not enough right now. Moreover, consumers are still not that into electric vehicles currently. One of the reasons behind that is that charging spots are not ubiquitous and this can be an issue. In addition to that, users will have to learn how to maintain electric trucks as they aren’t diesel trucks. On the other hand, some users might be lured by the fact that electric trucks are zero-emissions auto vehicles.

Other than that, the prices of electric trucks are steep and consumers are not just willing to accept a high price tag, regardless of the features of the trucks. For now, it might be a better idea to stick to hybrids that offer the best of both the worlds.
