What to check on a used Nissan Micra

Asking prices for the Micras we list in the UAE run from AED 17,500 to AED 17,500 — the bottom of the market for an automatic hatchback with a service record.

Two findings dominate, and both are about how these cars are used rather than how they are built. 92% of the Micras we inspect in the UAE show previous body or panel repair, against the 70% we would expect for hatchbacks of the same age and mileage in the Emirates — these arrive at a median of around 136,000 km and every one of those was in traffic. Tyres are the second flag, mismatched or damaged on 38% against an expected 15% — the cheapest thing here to correct.

The Kia Rio costs about the same, feels better made and is more comfortable over distance. The Tiida is roomier and the stronger asset. Take the Micra purely on purchase price and parking.

Buy on kilometres rather than model year. The Micra has carried the same basic engineering for years, and what changed across its life was styling and equipment rather than platform or engine. A later car with low kilometres is worth far more than an earlier one that has been worked hard, and the badge will not tell you which is which.

It does not, and that is the argument for buying a used one — about 36% after five years, against roughly 55% for hatchbacks of the same age. The Nissan Tiida does much better at about 54%.
