GWM sells one idea in the UAE and sells it well: the Tank, a boxy, body-on-frame off-roader with modern equipment at a price no established four-wheel-drive brand matches. It is a weekend-in-the-dunes car that works as a daily. GWM has split its output into sub-brands, and Tank is the off-road one, which is why these share almost nothing with the Haval crossovers.
How much does a used GWM cost in the UAE?
Half what a comparable Japanese off-roader asks. Asking prices run from AED 87000 for the smaller Tank up to AED 139900 for the larger one. What separates them is length and a third row rather than capability, so the cheaper car is not the compromised one.
Are used GWMs reliable in the UAE?
The accident history on these is remarkably clean: not one of the GWMs we have inspected in the UAE has shown evidence of previous body or panel repair, against the 35% we would expect for SUVs of the same age and mileage in this market. A median of just over 50,000 km explains most of it. The questions that matter are about use rather than age: an off-roader collects underbody damage, bush and steering wear that a road car does not, so have the underside inspected and check that the transfer case and locking differentials actually engage.
Do GWMs hold their value in the UAE?
Solidly for a newer badge: GWMs average about 51% of their value after five years across the models we can measure. Genuine four-wheel-drive ability supports that, because the people who want it will not accept a soft crossover.
Which used GWM should you buy?
Take the Tank 300 if the car is mostly for you and the weekend: shorter, easier to place on a trail, cheaper to run. Take the Tank 500 if you need three rows and a quieter cabin for the drive out there.
GWM or Chery?
Chery and BYD both build better road cars for the money, and if you never leave the tarmac buy one of those instead. GWM is the one to have when the ground stops being flat.
What to check on a used GWM
The report covers the underbody as well as the engine. On a car bought for the desert, read that section twice.
