The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that artificial intelligence technology is being used in taxis for monitoring and verifying if the preventive measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 are being followed. “The technology can also report offences such as the failure to observe physical distancing, and the improper wearing of face masks, thanks to video analysis feature<\/em>,” said Ahmed Mahboub, Executive Director of Smart Services, Corporate Technology Support Services Sector, RTA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The use of AI technology such as machine learning algorithms and computer vision has proved to be quite effective in detecting violations related to social distancing and wearing face masks for both riders and drivers. Such preventative measures <\/a>are critical for the public\u2019s safety and must be followed during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Mahboub, the use of AI technologies has proved to be quite effective in achieving a success rate of 100%. The introduction of the AI technology was done on a preliminary trial basis and based on the success, the technology will be transferred to all fleet vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experiment emphasized on the AI\u2019s capacity to analyse 2000 hours of video files per day. As a result it reduces the need for human intervention and saves the manpower and time that would have been used to analyse the videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AI technology is equipped to scan faces and confirm if the mask is being worn correctly. The technology will also calculate the distance between the driver and passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UAE government\u2019s branch, The Department of Municipalities and Transport Integrated Centre (ITC), also recently enabled cashless transactions in Abu Dhabi <\/a>as a measure to curb the spread of Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
