According to a survey conducted at the Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport, when it comes to self-driving cars, the biggest concern that the public has is infrastructure and safety. CarSwitch.com, an online marketplace for certified used cars in Dubai<\/a>, has put together these details to help you understand the main concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The study raised concerns based on four parameters: safety, legislation, infrastructure and technology. Safety and infrastructure were deemed to be the major concerns, whereas technology and legislation were the least concerns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participants at the two-day event were asked to vote by dropping a ball in the four parameters concerning self-driving technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s interesting that the biggest concerns about autonomous technology is not a technological one but rather philosophical: How safe would be safe enough?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One resident spoke to the media and said that his main reservation regarding autonomous vehicles is safety. He believed that the public still needs to be educated about autonomous vehicle technology. Self-driving cars need to acclimatise to driving among standard cars. Others believed that safety will automatically follow once the proper infrastructure is installed such as proper lanes, dedicated roads with wireless technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To further the vision for self-driving technology, universities, colleges and renowned companies will be carrying out autonomous driving scenarios and applications in Dubai. There was also a self-driving transport challenge held at the Dubai World Congress that was the first of its kind. The challenge was able to attract 65 different institutions and firms. Five firms were able to qualify for the final test, whereas three start-ups made it to the finals.

“Hosting the Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport and the accompanying exhibition, for the first time in the Middle East, is part of RTA’s efforts to support the Dubai Self-Driving Transport Strategy unleashed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai,<\/em>\u201d said Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the board of executive directors of the RTA. He also said that their goal is that by 2030, 25% of all trips in Dubai be driverless and smart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
