The short version
- Renting makes sense for short stays or if you want a hybrid — used hybrid listings are still scarce in the UAE.
- If you plan to drive for more than a year, buying a used car is almost always cheaper than renting month-to-month.
- SUVs are oversupplied on the used market right now — that means more choices and better negotiating room for buyers.
- A used BMW X5 (2018) lists for around AED 81,000 — roughly 83% less than its original new price.
- Shop in Dubai or Abu Dhabi; prices between UAE cities we serve differ by about 1%, so location doesn’t really matter.
Why UAE cars are moving from driveways to rental lots
Car rentals in the UAE are surging. Gulf News recently reported that more drivers are rethinking ownership altogether — choosing daily, weekly, or monthly rentals instead. The reasons aren’t surprising: flexibility, rising insurance costs, and the appeal of driving a newer car without the commitment.
But renting isn’t cheaper for everyone. The maths depend on how long you need the car, what type you want, and what’s actually available on the used market right now. Here’s what the numbers say.
The SUV glut: good news if you’re buying UAE cars
There are far more SUVs for sale than people searching for them. According to CarSwitch listings data (July 2026), SUVs make up about 63% of all listings — but only about 49% of buyer searches. That’s a real gap. Sedans are the opposite: they’re about 28% of listings and 24% of searches, so supply and demand are closer to balanced.
What does that mean for you? If you want an SUV, the used market is tilted in your favour. More supply means more options, and sellers are more motivated. If you’ve been renting an SUV month-to-month, now is a good time to look at used cars in Dubai instead.
“There’s a clear oversupply of SUVs in the used market right now. That’s an opportunity buyers shouldn’t ignore — especially if they’ve been paying rental rates for the same type of car.”

The hybrid gap: where renting still makes sense
Here’s the flip side. About a quarter of CarSwitch buyer searches are for hybrids — but hybrids make up barely 1% of our listings. That’s a massive mismatch. If you want a hybrid and you want it now, the used market can’t serve you well yet.
In that case, renting a hybrid from a fleet operator may be your most practical option while the used supply catches up. The powertrain mix on CarSwitch has shifted — hybrids went from zero listings in early 2024 to about 1% by early 2025 — but it’s still a trickle compared to demand.
| Category | Share of listings | Share of buyer searches | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| SUV | 63% | 49% | Oversupplied |
| Sedan | 28% | 24% | Roughly balanced |
| Coupe | 2% | 8% | Undersupplied |
| Hybrid (fuel type) | 1% | 25% | Heavily undersupplied |
| Petrol (fuel type) | 96% | 62% | Oversupplied |

When buying used beats renting — by a lot
Monthly car rental in Dubai runs anywhere from AED 2,000 to AED 5,000 for a mid-range SUV or sedan car. Over a year, that’s AED 24,000 to AED 60,000 — and you own nothing at the end.
Compare that to buying used. A 2018 BMW X5 lists for around AED 81,000 on CarSwitch — roughly 83% less than its original price of about AED 470,000. A 2019 BMW 330i sits around AED 76,000, about 73% off what it cost new. These are real cars with real kilometres on them, but the value drop has already happened. You’re not paying for that first-owner depreciation.
If you drive for two or three years and then sell your car, you’ll likely recover a decent portion of what you paid. With renting, every dirham is gone.
SUVs: 63% of listings, 49% of buyer demand — more choices, more negotiating room
Hybrids: 25% of buyer demand, only 1% of listings — still hard to find used
BMW X5 2018: listed around AED 81,000 — about 83% below its new price of AED 470,000
The break-even point
As a rough guide, if you plan to keep a car for 12 months or more, buying used is almost certainly cheaper than renting. Under six months, renting avoids the hassle of registration, insurance, and resale. Between six and twelve months is the grey zone — it depends on the car and what rental rates you can get.
For budget-conscious buyers, there are plenty of used cars in the UAE under 15,000 that can get you through a year for less than a few months of rental payments.
What about where you buy?
Prices across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah are within about 1% of each other on a like-for-like basis. So don’t drive across emirates chasing a saving that isn’t really there. Buy wherever is most convenient for you.
So, rent or buy?
Rent if you need a car for under six months, if you specifically want a hybrid (the used supply isn’t there yet), or if you want zero commitment. Buy used if you’re staying a year or more, you want an SUV (the market is loaded with them), or you’d rather build some equity instead of paying rent that disappears.
Every car on CarSwitch is inspection-verified by real people — no guesswork on condition, no hidden surprises. Browse trusted cars and see transparent pricing on thousands of listings. That’s one thing renting can’t offer you: knowing exactly what you’re getting.
If you need a car for more than about a year, buying used is almost always cheaper. Renting costs AED 2,000 to AED 5,000 a month for a mid-range car, and you own nothing at the end. A used car holds some resale value.
SUVs make up about 63% of used listings on CarSwitch, but only about 49% of buyer searches. That oversupply means more choices and more room to negotiate if you’re shopping for an SUV.
They’re still hard to find. About a quarter of buyers are searching for hybrids, but they make up only about 1% of listings. The supply is growing, but for now, renting a hybrid may be more practical.
Not really. Prices across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah differ by roughly 1% on a like-for-like basis. Buy wherever is most convenient for you.
