Everyone appreciates classic cars for sale in Abu Dhabi, but not everyone in the market can purchase, restore, and maintain one. This is partly because acquiring a classic car is not easy, partly because maintaining a classic car requires a lot of effort. Restored classics are often prone to breakdowns, poor gas mileage, and lack luxury features present in modern cars. In addition, most owners only drive their classic cars on special occasions rather than on a daily basis. Keeping this in mind, some car companies are striving to combine the best of both worlds and give a “classic but modern” twist to the much-beloved vintage cars.

The Classic-Electric Hybrid is getting popular!

Companies like Zelectric Motors along with EV West have started taking the initiative to successfully convert some old classics into electric cars. Upon seeing the popularization of EV conversion kits, Jaguar stepped up and announced that it will be offering all-electric versions of their popular  Jaguar E-types. Merging its knowledge of restoration and tech from the I-Pace, the Jaguar Classic was born. The Jaguar Classic runs on electric power and is a restored Electric E-type– and looks vintage to boot! And now we see another classic getting an “electrified makeover”!

The versatility of the technology used in electric cars has allowed the Volkswagen Group Components and eClassics to collaborate on an all-electric version of the classic Volkswagen beetle concept. The technology used to convert the beetle has been borrowed from current model production cars. For instance, the electric drive, the 1-speed gearbox, and the battery system for the concept has been based on the new VW e-up. A prototype model will be shown at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt.

Thomas Schmall, a member of the Volkswagen Group Components’ management, has mentioned that classic beetle owners will have the opportunity to have their car converted professionally with high-quality production parts.

Horsepower

The e-beetle will sport 82 horsepower or 60 kW, which is more than what it had back in the day. The underbody houses the battery, this lowers the centre of gravity, making the car more stable.

The electrification added more weight to the car, hence it has a reinforced chassis, and braking system adapted to better handle the electrification. Despite the car getting heavier, the car can still do 0 – 50 kph in less than 4 seconds, and 80 kph in around 8 seconds.

Weight

Electric motors respond and accelerate faster than traditional motors, allowing this 1,280 kg to keep up with the times. It will, flat out, do 150 kph, which is not bad for a classic but not advisable for the track.

Range

Its range is limited to 200km, which is not comparable to modern electric cars. Still, it boasts fast-charging and claims a range of 150 km after an hour of charging. More upgrades are being considered to increase the performance as well as the range.

The Volkswagen Group is already working on the electrification of other historical cars. It is considering an e-Porsche 356 as a candidate for electrification in the future. “We are already working together to prepare the platform for the Bus. An e-Porsche 356 could also be pursued in the future,” said Schmall.
