Recently, RTA in Dubai acquired fifty new Tesla cars for the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) fleet. The operation of Tesla electric vehicles is another manifestation of the UAE’s Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s vision to transform Dubai into the ‘smartest’ city in the world.
Launch of the Tesla taxi cars was held at Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 3 entrance. A number of senior officials were present at the occasion. According to the Dubai Media Office, the fifty cars added to the fleet include both the Model S and the Model X versions.
Both are revolutionary in their own class with Model S recognized as the safest electric sedan with the greatest range and the Model X SUV with its iconic falcon wing doors and seven-seat configuration hailed as one of the most comfortable in the electric cars market.
However, what really sets them apart from other taxis is their self-driving capability which is claimed to exceed the safety level of a human driver.
Reports suggest that a further 75 Tesla cars will be delivered in 2018 and 75 more in 2019. These deliveries will complete RTA’s deal signed on the sidelines of the World Government Summit in February this year ordering 200 Tesla cars for Dubai.
Speaking at the occasion, Director General of the RTA, Mattar Al Tayer, commented that the necessary infrastructure for the operation of these vehicles had already been installed, including the provision of thirteen electric recharging stations across Dubai, UAE. Al Tayer added that Tesla’s Autopilot is designed to make highway driving experience more enjoyable by reducing the driver’s workload and increasing their safety on the road.
