The Japanese company surprised CES attendants this year by presenting the Vision-S Concept car. It’s basically a self-driving EV. We’re not sure if and when Sony will put this car for sale in Dubai but we did some research and here’s everything we know about the concept car so far.

Vision-S Concept Exterior and Performance

The sedan wil come with 33 sensors including 3 solid-state lidar sensors and 12 cameras to detect human beings and objects outside. Sony also said that its hardware will enable Level 2 driver-assistance and it could be updated to Level 4 semi-autonomy via software updates. The car features a 118.1 inches long wheelbase.

Inside, there is a four-seat cabin and a huge glass roof. The Tokyo-based electronics giant didn’t delve into details regarding the car but it did say that the zero-emission vehicle’s electric motors can deliver 268-horsepower. It can go from a standstill to 62 mph in just 4.8 seconds and go up to 149 mph.

The dashboard is largely occupied by a panoramic windscreen and the side mirrors have been replaced by cameras on both sides. The display also has a driver information cluster and center infotainment display. For the viewing pleasures of the rear-seat passengers, even the headrests have displays and there is also a passenger-side display that is controlled with a jog wheel.

Vision-S Concept In-car Audio System

The car will come with 360 Reality Audio for superior sound quality and the speakers are also integrated into an unlikely place: the seats. The seat-mounted speakers are under the headrests and the car has 30 of them in total for a 3D audio experience that can be used along with the widescreen system.

The company collaborated with the likes of Qualcomm, Nvidia, Continental, Bosch, and ZF for this vehicle. To develop the car, it partnered with Magna Steyr, the same company that manufactures BMW Z4 and Mercedes G-Class. The automotive supplier engineered a new EV platform for the sedan and Sony says it’s also capable of powering other types of vehicles such as SUVs. Sony only got engineering services from the company.

Sony’s Prototype Will Most Likely Not Be Transformed Into A Production Car

Sony hasn’t revealed any intentions of turning this show car into a production vehicle yet. The company’s CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said that the prototype embodies the Japanese giant’s contribution to the future of mobility. All in all, the company didn’t really spend a lot of time discussing the car so it’s hard to comment on its plans.

However, it’s likely that we will see the showcased technologies in other cars, as that seems to be the main purpose behind this car. But with so many companies eyeing the promising autonomous vehicles category, we might be in for a surprise.
