Beware, UAE motorists! You could be in massive trouble if you have been driving around with an expired license whether in new or used cars in Dubai, UAE. RTA has some strict rules and fines in place for discouraging errant driving. Want to avoid trouble? All you have to do is renew your license and CarSwitch tells you how!
First, bear in mind that if you are under 21 years of age, you may apply for a license but it will only be valid for one year. If you are older than 21, you will be getting a license that is valid for five years for residents and ten years for UAE nationals. To renew your driving license you will need certain documents. These include:
- The expired driving license
- Emirates ID
- An eye test certificate
- Residency visa stamp on your passport
- Two photos
You will also require the following fees:
- AED 150 for the Eye Test
- AED 120 RTA fees to issue a new license
- AED 20 delivery fees
- Pay off any pending traffic fines
Now, there are three ways you can renew your driving license in the UAE.
Online
You can easily renew your license online from the comfort of your home through RTA’s website. Simply create an account, fill in your license details, and confirm your account. Your eye test results will be automatically sent from the optician to your RTA account, scan and upload the rest of the documents and proceed with the payment.
RTA Smart App
Download RTA’s ‘Drivers and Vehicles’ online mobile application, log on to the driver’s license services and fill in the details. Select a delivery method either the Customer Happiness Centres in Deira or Al Barsha, or via courier. Then pay the license renewal fees via a credit card.
RTA Call Center
Call RTA’s call center 8009090 and press 1 for driver and vehicle licensing services. Press 2 for driver license services and then 0 to speak to the operator. The operator will be able to guide you about the driving license renewal process further.
Until you receive the renewed license, you will be issued a temporary license over email that you can print and use for 5-15 working days. In case you have black points in another Emirates, your license will be locked and you will be unable to renew it without claiming the black points.The fine for delay in renewal of the license is AED 10 per month, with a maximum of AED 500. Your renewed driving license will be delivered to you within 2-5 working days. Congratulations!
