Fuel just got more expensive. Here’s what it actually costs you now.

Petrol prices in the UAE climbed roughly 16% in October 2026. If you drive a regular petrol car in Dubai — and about 96% of the used cars in the UAE are petrol — your monthly fuel bill just went up by around AED 100 to AED 150, depending on how much you drive. That’s AED 1,200 to AED 1,800 a year you weren’t spending before. If you’ve been thinking about a hybrid, you’re not alone: a quarter of all buyer searches on CarSwitch are now for hybrids, but only about 1% of listings are.

The short version

  • A typical petrol SUV in Dubai now costs roughly AED 750–900 a month in fuel alone.
  • A comparable hybrid would cut that bill by about 35–40%.
  • Nearly 25% of CarSwitch buyers are searching for hybrids — but barely 1% of listings are hybrids.
  • If you own a hybrid and are thinking of selling, demand far outstrips supply right now.
  • If you’re buying, the car price in UAE for used hybrids reflects that scarcity — act quickly when one appears.

How the October hike hits your wallet, by engine type

Let’s keep this concrete. Super 98 petrol moved from around AED 2.70 to about AED 3.13 per litre in October. Special 95 followed a similar jump. Here’s what that looks like for a driver covering 1,500 km a month — a pretty normal commute in Dubai.

A six-cylinder SUV — the most common body type on CarSwitch, making up about 63% of listings — now costs around AED 930 a month just to fill up. That’s roughly AED 130 more than last month. A hybrid doing the same commute sits closer to AED 420. The difference is about AED 500 every month, or AED 6,000 a year.

The hybrid supply gap is real — and growing

Here’s the mismatch. According to CarSwitch listings data from July 2026, hybrids make up just over 1% of available cars. But when we look at what buyers are actually searching for, about 25% of all fuel-type searches are for hybrids. That’s a gap of roughly 24 to 1.

“One in four buyers now asks for a hybrid, but we have almost none to show them. Every time one lists, it moves quickly.”

Ramiz Islam, Head of Marketing at CarSwitch

This matters for two groups of people. If you’re buying, you’ll need to move fast when a hybrid appears on CarSwitch — they don’t sit around. If you’re selling a hybrid, this is probably the strongest position you’ve been in. Demand is far ahead of supply.

From CarSwitch data
Petrol cars: 96% of listings, 62% of buyer searches
Hybrid cars: 1% of listings, 25% of buyer searches
The hybrid supply-demand gap: roughly 24x more demand than supply

The car price in UAE now includes a running-cost conversation

When people search for car price in UAE, they usually mean the sticker. But with fuel up 16%, the total cost of ownership matters more than it used to. A Nissan Patrol listed around AED 130,000 might look like a solid buy — and it is — but its V8 will cost you north of AED 1,000 a month in fuel now. A Toyota Fortuner does the same job for many families and drinks less.

On CarSwitch, V8-powered cars cost about 7% more than four-cylinder equivalents of similar age and condition. That premium made sense when fuel was cheaper. Now you’re paying more upfront and more every month. Worth thinking about before you commit.

What about electric?

Electric cars make up about 3% of CarSwitch listings and roughly 8% of buyer searches. Their “fuel” cost is around AED 150 a month if you charge at home — and this hike doesn’t touch them at all. But the used car price in UAE for electrics still carries about a 4% premium over petrol equivalents. Charging infrastructure is growing, especially in Dubai, though it’s still thinner outside the city.

For most buyers, a hybrid is the practical middle ground right now. You get the fuel savings without worrying about charger access.

Three things to do this month

1. Recalculate your monthly budget. If you’re shopping for your next car, add AED 100–150 to whatever fuel number you had in mind. That might shift you toward a smaller engine or a hybrid.

2. Set up alerts. If you want a hybrid, use the CarSwitch app to set a search alert. With only 1% of listings being hybrids, you want to know the moment one appears.

3. Think about selling your hybrid. If you own one and you’ve been considering an upgrade, the demand right now means you’re likely to get fair value — and quickly. Car installment options can make your next purchase smoother too.

How much more will I spend on fuel after the October 2026 hike?

For a typical petrol sedan in the UAE, the increase works out to roughly AED 95–130 extra per month, depending on engine size. A petrol SUV with a six-cylinder engine adds closer to AED 130 a month. Hybrids see a smaller jump of around AED 60.

Why are so many people searching for hybrid cars in the UAE?

About 25% of buyer searches on CarSwitch are for hybrids, largely because they use around 35–40% less fuel than a petrol equivalent. With fuel prices climbing, the monthly savings add up to roughly AED 6,000 a year for a typical commuter.

Are there many used hybrid cars available in the UAE?

Not right now. Only about 1% of CarSwitch listings are hybrids, while a quarter of buyers are actively looking for them. That means hybrids sell quickly when they appear. Setting up a search alert is the smartest way to catch one.

Does the fuel price hike affect used car prices in the UAE?

Not immediately, but running costs shape what buyers are willing to pay. Cars with smaller engines or hybrid powertrains tend to attract more interest when fuel goes up, which can push their resale values higher over time.
