Many of us don’t give a second thought to it when throwing trash out of the car but now we will have to. Drivers of new or used cars Dubai, if you are caught littering, be prepared to pay heavily! Wondering what’s the deal? CarSwitch brings you the scoop.

Plenty of Dubai motorists might be aware that the fine for littering on the roads has increased to Dh1000 and six black points. However, not everyone knows that it could go up to Dh1500! That is if you are simultaneously caught in the act by the Dubai Police AND the Dubai Municipality.

Under the new amendments to the Federal Traffic Laws, harsher punishment will be imposed on motorists caught throwing out the trash. Whether it involves flinging a cigarette butt on the road, a food or drink packet, or even a tissue paper, no one will be getting away with it anymore.

According to Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, head of UAE Federal Traffic Council and Assistant Chief for Operational Affairs at Dubai Police, not only does such a behavior harm other drivers and distracts pedestrians, it is also very bad for the environment. So, in order to promote safety on the roads, throwing out any type of waste from a car now incurs a double penalty. He further clarified that even if a passenger litters on the road out of a car, it will be the driver of the vehicle who is fined with Dh1000 and six traffic points.

Bear in mind that the Dubai Municipality can already impose a Dh500 fine for discarding trash in a public place, out of a moving vehicle or otherwise. The municipal fine has been the same since 2015. It is aimed at ensuring cleanliness and aesthetic appearance of the city streets.

So putting two and two together, both the police and the municipal inspectors can levy a separate fine on the offender if they catch the offense at the same time. Talk about a double whammy!  Now if you tend to throw away trash mindlessly on the road, give it another thought or you might be out of AED 1500. But if you are a good, law-abiding citizen, aware of your responsibility towards others and the environment, you have nothing to fear.
