Dubai residents, look out for detours if you are traveling on the Sheikh Zayed Road because some major upgrades are soon to start! And by soon we mean Friday, March 10. Construction work will last until July 2018. Want to know which routes to avoid? Keep reading.

The RTA is hard at work again to improve the roads of our beloved Dubai! This time they are closing off parts of Interchange 2 and 3 to pave way for some major construction work. So, don’t be surprised if you are faced with a diversion traveling on Interchange 2 or 3 on either side of Sheikh Zayed Road (SZR). And don’t forget, these diversions are for our own good, so let’s be patient folks!

Diversions will cover Umm Al Sheif Street, Latifa bint Hamdan Street, and Al-Zomorrud Street. If you are worried about them, don’t be, because alternative routes will be provided. Here’s a list of the diversions and alternative routes you can take:

  • The Umm Al Sheif roundabout and the service road parallel to the SZR (seaside) will be closed off. You can use the two temporary roundabouts RTA will build for entering and exiting Sheikh Zayed Road.
  • From Friday, March 24, traffic diversions on the mainland side of SZR will make Latifa bint Hamdan Street a one-way street. Cars coming from First Al Khail Street can head west, turn left to Al-Jarena Street and travel all the way to Street No. 3A. “A U-turn will replace the existing roundabout on Al-Zomorrud Street together with entries and exits on both streets,” explained Saleh, Director of Roads at RTA.

How are these diversions good, you ask? Well, first off they will help complete construction of roads and bridges that are part of the Al Wasl Street Improvements Project (Interchange 2.5). Officials at RTA hope these bridges will help ease traffic flow on Sheikh Zayed Road which means less effort and time spent in traffic. That would be a dream come true for Dubai residents, right?

RTA officials want motorists to follow directional signs for alternative routes and adhere to speed limits. So, let’s cooperate and make their job easier. Otherwise, you never know you might get stuck in a traffic situation similar to these worst traffic jams in the world. Safe travels out there, everyone!
