Dubai has risen above the usual hand waving to stop a taxi by the road. In fact, it has quite literally risen above the ground and taken the taxi to the sky. The world’s first drone taxi service has been tested and is capable of reaching great heights. Here are some interesting facts you need to know about it:
Autonomous Air Taxi (AAT): It is a self- flying taxi that can seat two individuals. Developed by a German firm Volocopter, the taxi is similar to a small helicopter. Equipped with 18 propellers and a small cabin the taxi rose to 200 meters in its test flight.
GPS Smart: The taxi so far is capable of following GPS tracks to estimate destination. However, developers are aiming at making the taxi navigation system more accurate. Ideas in the pipeline include the development of a smartphone app and better navigation capabilities.
Safety: The maximum flight duration estimated so far is 30 minutes. But, every possible measure has been taken to ensure a safe flight. The taxi is installed with backup batteries and rotors and even has parachutes available for an emergency situation.
Green: The taxi is an environmentally-friendly vehicle that is powered by clean energy resources and would require landing pads built around the city. It can reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h.
RTA would need a few more years to make this taxi widespread throughout Dubai. Development of infrastructure and improved navigation systems will take some time.
