The Dubai Police initiative that allows motorists get a discount on traffic fines might be extended to other emirates as well. Previously, the discount was for drivers of new and used cars in Dubai only but now it may include all emirates of the UAE.

The scheme was introduced on February 6, 2019 and gave the following discount offers:

  1. Drivers who don’t commit any offence for 3 months are eligible for a 25% discount on previously accumulated fines.
  2. Those with a six-month offence free period can avail a discount of 50% on previous fines
  3. 75% if motorists go nine months without reoffending
  4. A 100% discount on previous fines will be offered if they go a whole year without reoffending.

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, director of the UAE Federal Traffic Council and Assistant Commander-in-chief of Operations, stated that the initiative will be mulled over by the Council who will decide if they want to adopt it nationally.

After one year of the initiative [February 2020], the council will discuss and if results were successful then we will recommend it to the Ministry of Interior in a step to approve it throughout the entire UAE,” said Al Zafein in a press conference at Dubai Police Officer’s Club.

However, it’s for the ministry to decide whether or not the initiative will be adopted nationally.

The results so far were impressive as the initiative reduced the number of deaths on Dubai’s roads by 15 per cent this year,” said Al Zafein. Moreover, the initiative did produce impressive results as 23 people died compared in 2019 to 27 from last year over the same period. If hadn’t been for the Omani bus accident, the statistics would have been even better, he added.

In addition, the statistics show that a total of 425,371 motorists benefitted from the 50% discount on traffic fines, which amounts to 25% of drivers in Dubai. Also, 2% fewer traffic fines were issued as compared to the previous year.

According to the Dubai Police authorities, the drivers will now have a better motivation to follow traffic rules to avail the discount. In addition to that, there have been some economic benefits too as fewer accidents mean less damage to public property.
