Ever wished you could drift your car like a pro in the UAE but don’t know where to start? Worry not, we have got your back! To master the art of drifting you need three things: a compatible car that you might easily find among used cars for sale in Dubai, UAE, immense practice, and impeccable technique. We are probably making it sound a lot harder than it actually is. Don’t worry, just read on to find out more.
Choose the right car: Let’s start with the basics first! Without the right car, you can’t drift; it’s as simple as that. Get a rear or four-wheel drive, preferably in which you can turn off the Electronic Stability Control system. Also, keep in mind that practicing drifting can take a toll on the tires and worn down tires can compromise your safety, especially in the summer. It’s best if your car has cheap rear tires with limited slip differential, to keep both the rear wheels spinning.
It’s all in the technique: Remember, practice is the key to good drifting! Head over to a safe area of tarmac and put a cone in the middle. Now drive up to the cone and rip the handbrake to do an 180-degree handbrake turn.
You will be ripping the handbrake at a speed of 45-65 km/h so learn counter-steering. Allow the car to turn up to a 45-degree angle, then grab the wheel and steer in the opposite direction. That way you can control the car until it stops. Gradually increase speed and practice control while doing both things until you are comfortable. And there you have it. Voila, you are drifting!
If you feel a loss in drift speed or angle while drifting then kick the clutch pedal in and out a few times while maintaining throttle to revive both speed and angle until you are comfortable with the drift. Of course, this is only relevant for manual transmission cars. If you are using automatic transmission, then your drifting nirvana might be short lived. Let’s do this!
Make safety a priority: Even the best drifters can lose control sometimes. So make sure that you drift only in an area where it is safe! That means an open area where there are no pedestrians or motorists. An enclosed race track, for e.g. the Dubai Autodrome, will be ideal since you need to consider not only your own safety but also that of any audience or bystanders.
Remember what we said at the beginning. To master this driving technique you will need loads of practice. After all, practice makes perfect. So good luck with your drift trials and stay safe!
