Gulf News reported that in the second last quarter of 2018, distracted driving was the main reason for road deaths. In addition, excessive speeding and lack of courtesy to other users were also among the top causes of road deaths.
Almost 468 people died on the UAE roads because of a number of factors in 2018, however, 13% of them were killed as a result of distracted driving. As per official statistics, sudden turns caused by distracted driving led to a total of 438 accidents in Dubai.
In order to decrease the number of casualties, a year-long campaign has been put in place to alert motorists regarding the risks of distracted driving. The use of a cell phone or texting while driving can lead to a fine of AED 800 along with four black points.
This campaign intends to lessen the death toll due to road accidents by 25% in the second last quarter of this year compared to the same quarter last year. Moreover, it also aims to reduce traffic deaths to three per 100,000 residents by 2021.
The Directorate of Traffic and Patrols asked motorists to adhere to these rules to protect other road users, keep their eyes on the road while driving, follow the speed limits and give way to pedestrians.
The following mistakes can lead to fine of AED 800 and four black points:
