While observing the recent trends in the automotive industry, we will come to know that the downsizing engine-size trend is widespread these days. In the latest development, AMG has decided to weigh in by junking the glorious 6.2-litre V8 for a comparatively stronger twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 in its AMG 63 models. It is worth mentioning here that the new option has a peculiar sound somehow.

It is true that AMG is surrounding itself with a blanket of controversy as it has planned to skip the V8 all in all in favour of an electrified four-cylinder engine. Moreover, this little mill will appear first in the next-generation Mercedes-AMG C63, depending upon the new 2021-2022 C-Class due soon.

Sad news for the pundits

Truth be told, this news can be considerably annoying for the pundits who are still dejected after the demise of the 6.2-litre V8. It has also been reported that the former AMG boss Tobias Moers allegedly stormed out of the meeting at which this particular decision was made. It is true beyond the shadow of doubt that an AMG 63 model dropping four of its pot is definitely heartbreaking for many, yet it sounds like a decent option for Mercedes-AMG as a manufacturer. Besides, with the ever-constricting emission regs becoming a pain in their neck, the leap to a small four-cylinder would somehow help future-proof their AMG ammunition for a comparatively longer duration.

Offering more strength as compared to V8

In a recent interview to Car & Driver, Mercedes-AMG let it be known that the arrival of the new engine is cent percent confirmed. They also revealed that the hybrid setup will produce at least 500 hp, which is at par with what the existing V8 offers. That is why; the downsizing should not have any adverse impact on the straight-line drive experience. In reality, it may make it even better with the electric motor filling gaps in the power-band with its instant torque.

If Mercedes-AMG is gearing up to forage in its own parts bin, the ideal choice for the new engine is the 2.0-litre turbocharged mill from the CLA 45 that is developing 382 hp at present. Increasing the power output to 500 hp should be an easy undertaking with an electric motor. Moreover, the smaller C43 AMG will also downsize to an electrified four-cylinder, albeit with low power.

Originally, AMG was an independent engineering firm that specialized in performance improvements for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. DaimlerChrysler AG started to take a controlling interest in 1999, then became the sole owner of AMG in 2005.
