What to check on a used Honda

  • Body and paint findings first — quality of repair, not the fact of it.
  • CVT behaviour under load, on cars fitted with one.
  • Service history, continuous rather than clustered before sale.
  • AC at idle, front and rear.

Two Civics at the same price and mileage are rarely the same car. The inspection report on each listing is how you tell which is which.

There is a Honda at almost every budget. Asking prices across our UAE listings run from AED 13000 to AED 224900: compare within one year and the range makes sense — among 2018 cars a CR-V went for AED 36,000, a Civic AED 41,000, an Accord AED 52,000 and a Pilot AED 60,000.

Solidly, and near the top of the mainstream group: Hondas average about 49% of their value after five years across the models we can measure. The small cars are the firmest part of it, because demand for a cheap commuter here never dries up.

Toyota is the marginally safer bet and the easier car to service anywhere. Nissan undercuts both on price. Honda sits in between and drives noticeably better than either, which is why people keep coming back to it.

The electrics are the best part of the story: only 8% of the more than 2,500 Hondas we have inspected in the UAE carry an electrical or electronics fault, against the 13% we would expect for cars of the same age and mileage in this market. Bodywork is the other side: three in four show evidence of previous panel or paint repair, against the 63% we would expect on that basis. That is what city traffic does to a car over a median 131,000 km, and it is a history rather than a defect.

The Civic at AED 41,000 for a 2018 is the one to buy if the car is for you: cheapest to run, quickest to sell. The Accord is the same idea with a bigger back seat. The CR-V at AED 36,000 for a 2018 is the family crossover that holds up best, and the Pilot the three-row answer when five seats stop being enough.
